Concept of home:

A home is not only a place where you reside, eat or sleep but a place where you can feel safe and comfortable whilst being able to make memories either new or old since the home we grew up in changes as we grow up. In my design I felt that the locals in Brisbane must have grown up in a suburban environment so I placed a huge importance in the patio like area when rolled out by these containers since many of the suburban homes that were flooded contained a backyard or some sort but also to relate back to the traditional Australian outdoor living style.

Week 2

1 - identify how the understanding of “home” has changed over time

The understanding of 'home' has greatly changed over time, as described through the texts of Mallet and Porteous. However some of these fundamentals are retained throughout time and never changed since the space we grew up will always be engraved in our minds of how we see what a home is. As technology and history advances we see a shift in the way the way that humans see what a home is.

2 - description of the concept of home of own and classmate statements

Week 1 - Independent Study

Three statements and Three concepts

1:

  • Concept: Home is place but it is also a space inhabited by family, people, things and belongings-a familiar, if not comfortable space where particular activities and relationships are lived. n my account home is a virtual place, a repository for memories of the lived spaces. It locates lived time and space, particularly intimate familial time and space.
  • Statement: For all humans we consider our homes as properly the place that we spend most of the time in our daily lives, so of course memories will be shared, made and kept for their family and friends.
  • Concept: Simultaneously and indivisibly a spatial and a social unit of interaction
  • Statement: People enjoy other peoples company in their own houses, this is evident by family gatherings, parties and anything that involves interaction between human beings. These events are mostly enjoyed since they can be easily be familiarized with their surrounds, this is easily seen through the phrase 'make yourself at home'.
Giddens (1984). Understanding home: a critical review of the literature. The Sociological Review, (82).
2:
  • Concept: Home is not only confined within a structural building but "extends its walls to the neighborhood... suburb, town or city
  • Statement: When we think homes in Sydney, we generally think of suburbs. Many of us grew up in suburbs and many of find the forms, landscape and space of the suburbs as comforting and familiar.
